Playboy Reaches a New Low

Playboy Enterprises [PE] recently released a controversial edition of their magazine in Mexico. The issue with the headline; “We Love you, Maria” featured the cover with a scantily clad woman supposedly resembling the Virgin Mary.

The timing couldn’t have been worse for the pornographic publisher. The issue was released during the same week that thousands of Mexican Catholics celebrate their pilgrimage to Mexico City and the shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe.

Reuters reported that the cover was such an embarrassment to the company that PE executives issued an apology to their customers. In a prepared statement, the Chicago based company said that “Playboy Mexico never meant for the cover or images to offend anyone.” Playboy further stated that the cover and the images have “created offense, and we as well as Playboy Mexico offer our sincerest apologies.”

None of this is surprising to long time Playboy critics such as Dr. Judith Reisman (www.DrJudithReisman.com). Reisman remind us that Playboy has a long history of mocking religion and religious faith. In a number of past issues of the magazine, PE has long ridiculed Catholicism and traditional Christianity. Reisman noted that “Playboy has denigrated women and children for decades.”

In an interview for this story, Reisman said that “this attack (against Catholics from Mexico) should be put next to their exploitation of a Catholic school girl ‘stripper’ on the cover of their March 1996 (US) issue … Playboy front covers go through an expensive, long term vetting process from start to finish. The cover is discussed, argued over, photographed, re-photographed, touched and retouched. All of Playboy is very planned, very deliberate and very aggressive … Of course Playboy meant this to shock (us).”

Playboy founder, Hugh Hefner, along with retiring daughter and CEO, Christie, have often bragged about the positive ‘contribution’ their magazine has made to the sexual revolution of the 1960s and ‘70s. What is often discounted are the millions of people who have been negatively affected and/or enslaved by addictions to sexually explicit material as Hefner’s magazine.

The magazine has attempted for years to normalize its cultural appeal. According to Ms. Hefner’s MSNBC interview, the demand for pornography and her magazine is “stronger than ever.” Yet there is another side of that story.

Former Playboy Bunny, Brenda MacKillop recognizes that Playboy “is more than a pornographic magazine with pictures of naked women.” MacKillop says “it is a philosophy that enticed me to throw aside my Judeo-Christian ethics of no premarital sex and adultery, to practice recreational sex with no commitments.”

Most people in the faith community agree that more often than not Catholics and evangelicals don’t realize the true dangers of porn, the long lasting effects, and devastation it can bring to individuals as well as their families. It is hoped by MacKillop that more people will recognize the dangers of an industry that puts money ahead of the moral pollution it so clearly promotes.
